It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 06/04/12

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!
It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…who knows, you might discover that next “must read” book!
After doing the meme for a couple of weeks, we realized this would be a fun meme to start up with a kidlit focus - anyone reading and reviewing books in children's literature - it can be picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, you name it in the world of kidlit and it's in! We have loved being a part of this meme and we hope you do too!  We encourage everyone participating to go and visit the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and to comment on as many posts as you can. We love talking books and believe in sharing and discussing what we're reading. We hope you join us!

Last Week's Book Adventures:
Jen Says: My reading has definitely slowed down...and just keeps getting slower and slower. I hope summer gives me more time to read but I am realizing how much this new writing adventure with Kate and Gae is going to be. It's great but it will definitely keep me busy! I'll have to count reading and responding to comments as my weekly reading!

I did start Froi of the Exiles and I really like it so far. I have almost made it to the first 100 pages but it's almost 500 pages long so I have a long way to go! I also read more in The High Seas Adventures of Blue Jay the Pirate and am really enjoying it but I'm not even halfway yet.

Yesterday I finished Please Ignore Vera Dietz on audio. I thought the narration was good and the topic was super intense and interesting but I wasn't in love with this book. It's always hard for me to read really hardcore topics and can seem super depressing in general, but this one had a few holes or things I would have liked more explanation of so it wasn't a five-star book for me.

Kellee Says: It has been an okay week for reading. I finished two novels this week- I'll Be There by Holly Goldberg Sloan which is a phenomenally crafted novel, but, like When Things Come Back, it seems like a novel that adults would like more than teens. The other book I finished was The Survival Kit by Donna Freitas which is a wonderful book about grief and healing (oh, and romance!). I'll definitely be posting about this one.

I did read a lot of non-novels, though! I read one more graphic novel from Netgalley- Crogan's Loyalty by Chris Schweizer. The Crogan series is historical fiction graphic novels. I also found We Give Books which I'd heard about once before, but I had not investigated it and MAN! was I missing out. If you don't know what it is, We Give Books is run by Pearson and Penguin and you can read books online. And the best part is when you finish a book, you get to give a book to a charity! Win-Win! First, I went through all the book and made my library. And my goal has been to try to read at least 1 each day. So far I have read:
-Squish Rabbit by Katherine Battersby which reminded me of Cloudette
-Eruption: The Story of Volcanoes by Anita Ganeri
-Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell, now I know why Jen loves it so much!
-Take Me Out to the Ball Game by Scott Burroughs, a board book that illustrates the song
-Watch Me Grow: Ape by Lisa Magloff, SO CUTE!
-See How they Grow: Penguin by Mary Ling SO CUTE, too!
-Goodnight iPad by Ann Droyd, a parody of Goodnight Moon that shows our present society
-Goodnight Goon by Michael Rex, another parody that is quite funny and has great
                 illustrations
-Moomin and the Moonlight Adventure by Tove Jansson, a translated French picture book
-Little Owl's Night by Divya Srinivasan, a very cute book about nocturnal animals

Upcoming Book Adventures:
Jen Says: I will continue making my way through Froi of the Exiles and Blue Jay the Pirate this week! I have been reading Teach Like a Champion all school year and need to sit down and finally finish it, so that's on my list as well. I love the ideas they share. On audio, I am going to listen to The Penderwicks on Gardam Street this week. I love the first in the series and think it might make for a good read/listen for last day of school and first week of summer. I have a bunch of picture books I need to delve into as well as rereading parts of The Lions of Little Rock to discuss with Colby in June.

Kellee Says: I hope to finish The Night Circus today or tomorrow (I have one CD left) and then I am starting Hound Dog True. I started Orchards by Holly Thompson today and I hope to get to Guantanamo Bay by Anna Perera. And I'll keep on reading from We Give Books.  It is the last day of school, so #bookaday starts next week (though I will be on vacation...) and I am so excited!
