Today Poetry Friday is at Check It Out! Be sure to visit and check out all the great poetry posts!
Last weekend, I was in Boston staying with my dear friend, Jennifer Reed. It feels like we were all over Boston but we did lots of non-typical touring and discovered some great things. On Saturday morning, Jennifer suggested we explore Forest Hills Cemetery. It was a bit drizzly but we ventured out anyway. I'm so glad we did because it was absolutely beautiful and a little rain didn't hurt us at all.
As we started roaming, Jennifer remembered a family friend who was buried there and we decided to look up a map of graves and to see if any famous people were buried there. We discovered that ee cummings was buried there. We walked and did some running but we never found ee cummings' grave. Finally, on our way out, we started really paying attention to the plot markings and trying to figure out where we were on the map. It definitely took some perseverance but persevere we did! We found ee cummings' grave up on a hill, tucked up against a line of trees next to his wife and her family (her marker is on the left and his on the right).
Standing on the hill, I pulled out my phone to look up the following poem and read it aloud. How absolutely beautiful is this poem? What a treasure to be able to leave behind ideas such as this.
[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]
by e.e. cummings
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
It's just amazing to me to think how we carry so many people with us in our hearts. I'm glad to carry all the wonderful memories from Boston last weekend in my heart but this one I hold especially close. Walking the cemetery was such a wonderful way to celebrate life. Have you been to a cemetery lately? I would love to hear your thoughts, obviously they can hold sad memories but I hope you find the solace in the memories. Thanks for stopping by, thanks for letting this poem into your heart, I hope you carry the lovely sentiment with you today!
