This week, I started reading The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer and I can't wait to talk more about it next week. Until then, and even as a bit of a leading up to it, I'm sharing Brené Brown's TedTalk Listening to Shame. I've read Brené's book Daring Greatly and it is beautiful. Hearing her voice in this talk makes her even more endearing.
The more I write, the more I realize stories come from a place of vulnerability. People love connecting and being connected and one real and true way to connect to another person is to let them see our vulnerabilities. It's a sense of being sincere about who we are, our strengths and our flaws. And sincerity is a way of building trust. (I believe trust to be: sincerity, reliability, and competency.) When we trust another person, we can connect with him or her.
Watch and think about what makes you vulnerable. Do you see your vulnerabilities as weaknesses? What are some ways you might remind yourself that vulnerability is the ultimate measurement of courage instead of as an example of our weakness?
Watch and think about your shame gremlin. Brené says shame is two things: 1. I'm never good enough and 2. Who do you think you are? What are some ideas you have for facing that shame gremlin? I suggest writing! Maybe make a list of what that little booger whispers in your ear and then make a list of what you want to say back to him!
Thanks for being vulnerable today,
looking into your heart, and exploring your story with me today!
I'm glad you are here.
Amazing!! This was a great watch, Jen! She makes a good point to note that vulnerability is courage. Courage to do something you have never done before or do something that is against the norm. I have never seen vulnerability be explained this way but it makes sense. I am very vulnerable right now, but in a good way, because I know I'm growing and I'm capable of succeeding. Right now I'm on a diet that is against the norm, I have a new job that is nothing I have done before and this week I'm filling in for a position that I have never had before. It is scary and I can see my thoughts going two ways. Right now, I'm on cloud nine because this diet makes me feel great. I know that I am capable, I am woman and I have the experience to succeed in both positions. But at a time of "vulnerability" like if I feel tired, or confused I can see myself feeling weak because I'm not an expert and putting myself down like I don't have what it takes. That's just it though. You need to be vulnerable, be courageous to learn something new and experience new things. Thank you for sharing this video with us. It is truly inspiring. I love bettering myself with these types of talks and thinking outside of the box. Hey, you Gremlin! I am a hard worker, have years of experience working with people, I am a nurturer and so I naturally want to help the people around me, coworkers included. I am a fast learner with a great personality. So there! Take that, and that! :) Okay, now I'm being silly. Great share. Thanks Jen!
ReplyDeleteYou aren't being silly! Shame is such a real thing and those little gremlins are too! I'm glad you know about this now because I do think it helps us navigate life when we have more understanding of our emotions and how we can handle them. Thanks for stopping in!
DeleteThanks! I definitely think this will help me navigate through life. There is so much that I think a lot of us don't understand about our emotions. Thanks Jen! and thank you for sharing this!! :) Can't wait for all your future posts! :)
