Happy Teachers Write 2019!

Happy Teachers Write 2019!

Things are looking a bit different this year but I'm excited to be a teacher who writes and to connect with other teachers who write.

Here's a bit about me:

I'm a writer, blogger, and educator. I taught for ten years and then have spent the last seven years working as a teacher leader, curriculum coordinator, tech integration specialist, and most recently an instruction coach. This year I'll be teaching a section of monolingual 8th grade ELA/SS and a section of transitional bilingual 7th grade ELA/SS. It was my choice to go back to teaching because I truly miss reading and writing with kids all day.

I'll be teaching in the middle school where my oldest son goes to school. It's about half a mile from our house so I'm totally looking forward to walking to school everyday. We live in a northern suburb of Chicago.

I started writing with a thought in my brain that I'd like to be published someday in 2011 and I've been writing with teachers write since started in 2012. Today I blog (although not as consistently as I'd like) and write picture books and novels and lots of other things.

If you're here, I hope you're writing with us this year! And I'd love to hear about you!

A reminder of my rules for Teachers Write Sunday Check-Ins:

1. We respect each other and the type of writing we do.
2. We only offer constructive criticism.
3. We are positive and encourage each other at all times.
4. We recognize and maintain this as a safe environment.
**I reserve every right to put the smackdown
on anyone who messes with our positive energy.**

Ideas for today, in the comments section:
Introduce yourself! Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do?
What kind of writing are you working on? Fiction or non-fiction?
A picture book, chapter book, novel, poetry?
What are you looking forward to and planning for Teachers Write?

If you'd like to join me for our Zoom chat next week, I'll post the link in my blog post here next Sunday morning.

Here are the dates and times for our Mentor Text Meet Ups:

Sunday, July 14th
Sunday, July 21st
Sunday, July 28th

5:00 pm PST / 6:00 pm MST / 7:00 pm CST / 8:00 pm EST

Until then, shine on!

  1. Hey Jen, Am I the first to respond? I am Margaret from South Louisiana. I teach gifted students in 3 elementary public schools in a mostly academic pull out program. I teach ELA. I am finding my comfort zone is poetry. I am working on a few book projects. I also blog regularly and write with my students. I am publishing a middle grade novel this fall, fingers crossed, with an independent publisher. This book was written in pieces during Teachers Write.
I look forward to this new format of things. I hope I can join one of the Zoom meetings, but this Sunday is my daughter's baby shower. Yes! I'm expecting my second grandchild in September.

  2. Hi Jen-
For some reason my comments from my ipad aren't registering here. Trying again from my computer. I'm Rose from PA and have been participating in Teachers Write for a few years. I love the learning, inspiration, and encouragement. I'm a retired reading specialist but still keep my connection with kids through volunteer work at a local botanical garden. Currently I'm writing picture books and some poetry. I also have a few co-authored books written for teachers on using children's lit as mentor texts in teaching writing. Hopefully I'll be able to join you on Sundays. Thanks to everyone at Teachers Write!

  3. Good afternoon, Jen. Feel a little late to the game this year. I'm having a little trouble navigating where I should be on which day, but I found you. Yay! I teach 5th grade ELA/SS to two periods daily at a K-8 school in Northern California. I have been participating in TW for several years. It has been a journey of discovery for me. Every year I learn more about writing, and more about myself. This year I am working on a picture book. I have just started, and I guess we will see where it takes me. I appreciate all of the author/mentors who contribute to Teachers Write. Thank you for all that you do to contribute to my teaching practice and my own personal writing.
