It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 3/30/2020

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now...you just might discover your next “must-read” book!

Kellee Moye, of Unleashing Readers, and I decided to give It's Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children's literature - picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit - join us! We love this meme and think you will, too. We encourage everyone who participates to visit at least three of the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
Oh my goodness. I thought I was going to SO MUCH reading and writing done. But I didn't. I did read some of Don't Keep Your Day Job, How do Do Nothing, This Book Is Anti-Racist, The Crossroads of Should and Must and also Whatcha Mean, What's a Zine? I have read a lot, I just haven't finished anything.

To say I feel scattered would be an understatement. I don't just feel scattered, I feel confused and whiny and worried and uncertain and scared. I texted a friend who is a yoga teacher to ask her about grounding because I think that's what I need. I need to figure out how to feel grounded amidst all of this. I'm adding that to my reading to do this week.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
As a teacher and a parent we're starting elearning this week so I'm not sure how that will impact my reading life. I'm definitely going to do some research on different grounding activities and try some out. Two weeks ago I repotted two plants and also started some seeds. I also went out in my back yard and turned over the dirt in some of the big pots we have. That felt good. This week I did a yoga for stress relief class that was phenomenal and I pulled out some big construction paper for brainstorming. I also am doing a paper mache project with my older son. All of this getting my hands on stuff seems to be helping me feel grounded.

Other than that, I'm going to keep on with the books i'm reading and see how it all goes. How are you all doing? I'd love to hear updates and know if you've noticed differences in your reading life. Stay well, friends!

Let's Chat! A FREE 2-Week Book Club!

Well...I spent last week decompressing. I've felt a lot of emotions in the last week as I've processed not seeing my students, having a little bit of a break from school, having so much time to do all the things, wondering how long this will last, missing all the things we used to be able to do and all the people we could see, and wondering how things will be different going forward.

I've also been drinking a lot of tea. The photo above is from the last cup of coffee I had out in the world before the time of quarantine. I met my friends Cheryl and Joy at Cup O'Joe Coffeehouse in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin where we got to sit on a Warner Bros. replica of THE orange couch from Friends.
With all my tea drinking time, I've been reading and writing and working on ideas for Story Exploratory. I love Story Exploratory and am excited to continue to put energy into making it grow. I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be a writer and what it looks like to live the life of a writer. If you've read my blog, you know I've spent a lot of time sharing mentor texts I love and what my writing life is like. Looking through my previous blog posts made me realize that I've neglected this space though and I miss blogging.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? has been a constant in my blogging life but I'm inspired to get back to sharing other things here as well. I'll be sharing more mentor texts, more of my writing life, and more of my teaching life. My plan is to get my habit started again and then continue blogging when quarantine comes to an end. Are there any specific posts or topics you'd like to see from me? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

Besides blogging more, I'd like to announce that I'm hosting a FREE 2-week virtual book club starting next week on Wednesday, April 1st.
story exploratory, book club, free book club, crossroads of should and must, virtual book club
We're reading Elle Luna's book The Crossroads of Should and Must. You can buy the gorgeous hardcover or ebook from our friend Kathy at The Brain Lair

Our meetings will be held via Zoom at 4:30 CST.

The dates for this book club are:

Wednesday, 4/1
Friday, 4/3
Wednesday, 4/8
Friday, 4/10

To sign up, click HERE.

I'm proud to say that I've been hosting monthly workshops since last January and even the coronavirus isn't stopping us. This month's workshop is this weekend on Saturday, March 28th and we'll be meeting via Zoom. If that sounds fun to you, you can find more information and register here.

Seriously, writing all this out has been fun! It's nice to be back in the wonderful world of blogging. It feels like home. When the world is so weird right now, it's nice to feel a little bit of normal.

Again, if there's anything you'd appreciate from me right now, please let me know! I've been brainstorming but always have you in mind so let me know in the comments if there's something I can share that would help you out.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
What a difference a week makes! I can't believe it's only been one week that we've been out of school. It feels like forever since I was in school with my students. This week is our official spring break week and then I'm guessing we'll here more about elearning but as of right now we don't have any information.

I have been reading! That's a good thing! I finished listening to When Breathe Becomes Air and I started listening to The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. I've been reading How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell  and also getting back to This Book Is Anti-Racist by Tiffany M. Jewell.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
This week I'll be reading more of How to Do Nothing and This Book Is Anti-Racist. I also have Don't Keep Your Day Job by Cathy Heller which I have been waiting to read. She's starting a book club tomorrow so I'm going to join in and finally read the book. I also hope to listen to more of The Cruel Prince

Last Week's Book Adventures:
We finished The Giver and Seedfolks this week. Friday was our last day of school for a while so I'm glad we were able to finish both of these. I planned for us to do some hexagonal thinking and write essays and do culminating activities...but we ended up just being able to finish the books. On my own, I finished listening to Stamped and Internment. Internment is a near-future dystopian and it was really good. I also read more of my Flow magazine and more of my Pablo Neruda poetry. I also started listening to When Breathe Becomes Air.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
My plan this week is to continue listening to When Breathe Becomes Air and then listen to The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. I have a bunch of books that I checked out from the library and I think I'm going to start with Ibi Zoboi's American Street

Last Week's Book Adventures:
We read more of The Giver and Seedfolks last week and I listened to more of Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. I did also grab a book of poetry by Pablo Neruda and I started reading. I haven't really, truly tried to read in Spanish since high school but I'm committed and the fact that it's poetry is nice because I can take it one poem at a time.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
We'll be finishing The Giver and Seedfolks this week. I'll be listening to Stamped and then I'll officially be listening to Internment. I'm going to keep slowly reading/translating/reading my poetry and I have a Flow magazine I'm savoring as well.

I'm having a lot of fun reading and discussing The Giver and Seedfolks with my students. I actually started listening to Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. It's really good so far and I anticipate I'll finish it this week and move on to Internment.
